A Celebration of Design, Photography and
Cultivation of a Good Eye
A Walk in the Park
The 4th of July in an almost-small-town in America and this celebration was directly across the street from my home in one of the town’s small and pristine parks. It is an annual celebration complete with choral singers, the local symphony’s rendition of the 1812 Overture, and a canon. It is an afternoon event and hundreds of people - perhaps a thousand or more - come to see.
So as I gazed out over the crowds of people who had gathered it struck me as the 21st century version of Seurat’s Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte. I grabbed my camera and took – A Walk in the Park. I wanted the resulting images to reflect a pointillist frame of reference. Digital photography modified with subtlety and without hesitation I give you, A Walk in the Park.
Different Streets
Urban legend has it that in the early days of computer programming, those in charge decided to develop software for language translations. One of the first attempts was to use an American idiom and try the program to translate from English into Chinese and then back into English to test their skill. The idiom chosen was “out of site, out of mind”.
Out of sight, out of mind. The computer did its computing in both directions, and what emerged as the English equivalent from the Chinese translation was “invisible imbecile”.
It couldn’t have worked better.
Excerpt from Ruby Slippers
I knew there was an abandoned house on the way to the National Park but I had no idea it was much more than that.
It wasn’t as I remembered it from 20 years ago. There were several buildings in addition to the main house and the fence had an opening with no signs asking (?) one to not enter. Each building had its own story but none of them were willing to tell.
Ghosts
Eventually, I circled around to the main building and entered through the open back door. For reasons that were not rational, I called out, “hello !? may I come in ? It wasn't a question as much as it was a cautious declaration.” I worked quickly being alone and having an uneasy feeling about the energy in the house. In the kitchen there was a chair upended on its side. The bedroom with a box of books, a dinning room (perhaps) and then the living room where it sounded like two birds were frantically flying around, even though I could not see them.
I left quickly – and it was when I started working on the digital images that I saw what was impossible to explain as lens flare. You can come to your own conclusions.
Terra Firma
The plane made another gentle sweep on its path westward. Here the earth could no longer be anonymous. Stretching more than 3,000 miles from central New Mexico to Northwest Alaska the Rocky Mountains are made up of five sections and we were just greeting the front-range of the Southern Rockies. Longs Peak sat silently far off to the right as Rocky Mountain National Park quietly cradled the headwaters of the Colorado River. This part of the journey was where it became interesting. Boulder, with its tilted monoliths known as the Flatirons, rolled its way up and hugged the jagged slabs, the first break the earth made from the flatness of the great plains. "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.
"It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important." "It is the time I have wasted for my rose--" said the little prince, so that he would be sure to remember. - from The Little Prince
Miksang
I was given my first camera and contact printer when I was 9. It has taken half a century for me to understand that my original photographs (the images of an unfiltered nine year old), were Miksang and that this vision has continued throughout my life.
Miksang is about revealing the truth of pure perception. When I see something striking and penetrating, it becomes a connection between instinct and awareness and in that moment I can capture that perception with nothing added, nothing missing.
When the way comes to an end, change.
The Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu lived hundreds of years before Jesus. He left a corrupt royal court in China and went to the western part of the country dressed as a farmer so he wouldn’t be recognized. At that point he was already known as an important spiritual leader and even with his common clothes people knew who he was and they asked that he write down his wisdom. What he wrote became the Tao Te Ching
MoreHaving changed, then pass through
And so, a long time ago, I was introduced to the I Ching. At the time it was the ‘thing’ to know - or at least pretend you knew. I once ‘threw’ the I Ching using pennies. I don’t remember if I used the correct procedure, and I didn’t understand the importance of the answer.
The the final hexagram showed the six stacked horizontal lines (starting at the bottom) as - two unbroken (Yang) - two broken (Yin) - and two unbroken again. Inner Truth, also known as Inner Most Sincerity. Considering it was the first and only time I had ‘thrown the I Ching’ the result was incredibly prophetic for the map on which I have been traveling. I was informed:
“Centering in truth involves becoming conscious of the relationship between your heart and the circumstances of your life. This requires connecting with the fundamental wisdom that is within you, within other people, and within all of nature.“
There is a VERY high probability that, at some point, you will need to print your project, or have a new logo design created. Your project could include a poster, flyer, newsletter, screen print - I'll stop there - you get the idea . . .
There are many exceptional digital cameras on the market and so it's not so much about what equipment you have - but - knowing how to use that equipment - and knowing how to post-process the images
Contrary to current trends in Artificial Intelligence, Graphic Design is alive and well and requires a unique combination of creative and technical skills and mastery of several tools. Good design should be invisible and bad design is uncomfortably noticable.
What is needed here is expertise in:
CREATIVITY - Photography is and art and you owe it to yourself to look at the variety of a photographer's work to see the range of their creativity. You may want 'traditional' imagery - - or - - something more 'contemporary' - many of my examples are here.
DETAIL - A photographer's eye for detail is a cornerstone for capturing the details of what you want an image to convey. The details of cropping, color balance, sharpness, and composition are only part of the process.
PATIENCE - Patience translates into several possible skills. Not only does it take time - and many exposures to capture the essence of some images - it also takes patience and know-how when post-processing images to make them - - exceptional.
PEOPLE SKILLS - This applies not only to images that include people, but also in communicating with a client about - expectations and what a client is looking for in your creating their vision in photographs.
PASSION - The magic and beauty of photography should be evident in a photographer's work. The images you want for either a website or for a printed portfolio should show the passion the photographer has for making wonderful images.

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”
- Albert Einstein
It's quite simple. I don't and won't share ANY information you might provide with ANYONE at ANY time.
