Different Streets

Urban legend has it that in the very early days of computer programming, a decision was made to develop software for language translations. One of the first attempts was to use the idiom "out of site, out of mind" and translate from English into Chinese and then back into English.

The computer did its computing in both directions, and what emerged as the English equivalent from the Chinese translation was “invisible imbecile”.
